Running Latte
June 29th 2007 08:12
Every morning without fail, I need a dose of caffeine to jump start my day. And I probably won't be the only one to be constantly late for work because I am making a pitstop to pick up a cuppa Latte.
Today, coffee is a giant global industry employing more than 20 million people. This commodity ranks second only to petroleum in terms of dollars traded worldwide. With over 400 billion cups consumed every year, coffee is the world's most popular beverage.
Although coffee originated from Ethiopia, the Cafe Latte is of Italian origin. A latte is prepared since the early 1980s with approximately one third espresso and two-thirds steamed milk, with a layer of foamed milk approximately one quarter inch thick on the top. A typical Cafe Latte is prepared by pouring steamed milk into a mug (preferably glass) and then adding the Espresso shot (double or triple shot, as desired!) into the steamed milk. Many garnish with a Cinnamon stick or Chocolate powder. Although, my personal fave is the Caramel topping.
The drink is very similar to a cappuccino; the difference being that a spoon is used to separate the layers of foam and steamed milk in a latte, while the milk in a cappuccino is free-poured (lattes also typically have a far lower amount of foam).
With evolution, latte is now a very much diversified beverage which has been modified to suit personal tastes. The iced latte and the chai latte are the more popular variations. The Iced latte suits the summer seasons which provdes for the expected caffeiene fix and cooling effect.
The Chai Latte is a tea alternative to the original Espresso based latte. Its origin is from the Himalayan culture. It consists of black teas, honey, milk & a variety of herbal spices. The Chai Latte is normally served cold over ice or steamed as a Latte.
Either the Chai or Espresso version works fine for me. As long as I have my regular Latte pleasure, I am good to go!
