Electric Rice Cooker
Steam Rice
If you use an electric rice cooker, we just put the rice and water into the cooker and press the button. If you use the stove top method there are several steps to follow when you cook the rice. Rice cooker is the convenient way of cooking especially for beginners, but I recommend that you use the ordinary cooking pan so you will experience and master the art of steaming rice the traditional way.
Water measurement, timing techniques are very important, from boiling, simmering until rice is perfectly done.
Steps:
1 cup of rice(add 1 1/2 cup of water)
1. Rinse or wash rice in cold water until water is clear, discard water, do this about 3 times.
2. Combine rice and water(for every cup of rice use 1 1/2 cups of water. Asians cooked their rice in a traditional way by measuring the "hand method" - When you dip your middle finger on top of the rice, the water will cover up to middle line of the finger. (If this is complicated, don't follow this method).Excess water will make rice mushy.
3. Cook rice in medium heat, bring to a boil. Open the lid right away, and swirl/stir it once and close the lid. Reduce the heat to low fire. Simmer and let rice cook for about 5 minutes. Turn off the heat. Leave the pan in the burner for another 5 minutes.
If you use the electric rice cooker - just push the button and rice will cook, just leave it and it will be cooked automatically.
NOTE: Don't leave the kitchen while you are cooking the rice. Watch it until it boils because water will spill off your cooking pan and this will mess your burner.

Have you ever tried burned rice? It's not to everyone's taste, but the dark brown, hard, crunchy rice at the bottom of the pot is really delicious (for some people).

but I know that old method where you play it by the "finger" lol
Irene is right, it doesn't work if you're cooking too little so just follow the 1:1 or 1:1.5 cups.
It usually depends on the type of rice we're cooking, there are those that need more water and those that need less..
nice topic when the world's experiencing Rice Shortage

Irene - I have cooked rice the traditional way for many years and it worked out right. However, I use the rice cooker if I have a party or expecting a company of friends. Burnt rice-I don't like it, so once the pot is boiling, reduce the heat to low, while simmering, I usually do this technique, I put another pan on the burner and place the pan with the rice on top of it(double boiler method) this is the safest way. I use T-Fal for cooking rice.
Hazel - yes, rice cooker is much better but if you cook 1 cup of rice only, you better use the T-Fal pan.
I prefer steam rice without butter & salt. There are many ways to cook rice (I will write more on this matter next time).
Pratice makes it perfect.

Don't give up! Try it first, 1 cup rice to 1 cup water. Once it boils, stir it once, cover, simmer, reduce the heat to low and start timing your rice for 5 minutes. If you see that is water still boiling over, turn off the heat. Let it stand on the burner for another 5 minutes. Remember that steam cooks the rice so cover the lid of your pan.
Just try there's nothing to lose. By the way, buy long grain rice like Jasmine or Basmati variety not Uncle's Ben(because they are parboiled). Good luck.

If your rice cooker light is not working this is what you do. Once the rice starts boiling just cover it and from time to time check the rice if its already cooked. The setting will turn to warm automatically if your light is working properly.
Opening the lid will not affect the switch.
