Food, Glorious Food

May 11th 2007 04:04
Foodie Culture explores the innovative premise that everything having to do with food represents a cultural act. It is an exploration of culture through food (a very exciting journey to explore!) What we consume, how we acquire it, who prepares it, who’s at the table, and who eats first, defines the cultural belonging of a person.

It is even more exciting with globalization taking over the world and multi cultural cities and communities forming. This gives birth to extraordinary gastronomical journeys with “fusion foods”. The transmission of recipes allowed food to acquire its own language and grow into a complex cultural product shaped by climate, geography, the pursuit of pleasure and the desire for health.

Beyond merely nourishing the body, what we eat and with whom we eat can inspire and strengthen the bonds between individuals, communities, and even countries. The role of food in cultural practices and religious beliefs is intricate and varies among individuals and communities.

Let’s also not forget the all important pleasures, guilty indulgences and absolute must-haves - cravings and addictions. The fast paced and ever evolving corporate world plays a role in the food choices we make and the necessities to keep our engines running (quick gulp of my skinny caramel latte). And… the latest food raves and quirky tastes!

As we begin this journey together, I will be testing, researching, revealing and dishing out facts, information and of course, good reads, on anything and everything about food in relation to culture. I am blessed to be residing in one of the most multicultural cities in the world. Where we have nationalities of almost every country living, working and eating in this sunny island. This obviously opens a whole new world to tastes, flavours, indulgences and mmm… mmm… glorious food!
